URBAN REVITALIZATION-MICHIGAN
DETROIT— Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Monday named Harvey Hollins III as director of the Michigan Office of Urban and Metropolitan Initiatives. During Snyder’s State of the State speech in January, the governor said he planned to create the office to help revitalize big cities in the state, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint and Saginaw.
EXCHANGE-SHOOTING CHAMP
MARION TOWNSHIP — Jason Jonckheere is a surgeon with his shotgun. Only 16, the Fowlerville resident broke 198 out of 200 targets with his trusty Beretta 12-gauge shotgun at the Michigan Trap Association’s state shoot in early July, earning himself a junior state championship. Set to enter his junior year at Howell High School, Jonckheere spends most every day shooting, either with the Monroe Pride shooting team, at the Howell Gun Club in Marion Township, where he built his shooting skills, or on his own, which he prefers. EXCHANGE-SAGINAW MURALIST
SAGINAW — Sagnasty. The nickname evokes a gritty, tough image and is a source of pride for some. It’s also telling of Saginaw’s troubled economy, surplus of abandoned homes and history of crime. Most who live in or near Saginaw have used the name in a derogatory manner at one time or another; others do so endearingly. Eric Schantz, a muralist and graffiti artist, thinks there are better ways to portray his city. By Gus Burns, The Saginaw News.
